Tea Ceremony Experience Lesson (First-timers)

  • Content: Enjoy delicious tea and seasonal sweets while learning basic etiquette, including how to receive tea.
  • Time: Approx. 45 min to 1 hour
  • Fee: ¥1,000
  • What to Bring: Nothing (Please come empty-handed. White socks are recommended for comfort.)
  • Notes: English support available. Perfect for fitting in during your sightseeing.

Regular Lessons (For those wishing to continue learning)

“Personalized, attentive private lessons tailored to your individual progress.”
  • Content: Each session carefully covers tea preparation techniques suited to your level and the season. At the Momoyamadai classroom, you can also learn the rare “charcoal preparation” method.
  • Time: 40 minutes to 1 hour per session (varies depending on the preparation content)
  • Fee: ¥4,000 per session
  • Items to Bring: Fukusa cloth, kaishi paper, wagashi knife, folding fan, white socks (or tabi socks)
  • Language: Requires detailed explanations in Japanese; therefore, participation is intended for those who can speak Japanese or who can attend with someone who can.
  • Notes: Occasionally, opportunities to practice what you learn arise, such as tea ceremonies or seasonal tea gatherings.

Family Tea Ceremony

“Enjoy Japanese tradition together with your child”
  • Content: Basic etiquette for parent and child, how to receive sweets, experience of thin tea
  • Time: Approximately 1 hour per session
  • Fee: Parent-child pair: ¥4,000 (Additional ¥2,000 per extra person)
  • What to bring: White socks (or tabi socks) only. All other tools will be provided.
  • Note: For children aged 4 and above and their guardians. As the Parent-Child Tea Ceremony Class values Japanese home culture, it is intended for Japanese households.

Reservation

Please inform us of your preferred date and time via our website's inquiry form or official LINE. We will promptly send detailed access information and a list of items to bring.

Arrival & Explanation

Please come to your reserved classroom . You may arrive in your regular clothes, but you will change into white socks (or tabi socks) before entering the tea room. Once ready, we will guide you to the quiet tea room.

Observing the Tea Ceremony

Duration: 15-20 minutes

First, observe the teacher perform a seasonal tea ceremony. Listen to the sound of boiling water and the tea whisk (chasen), forgetting your daily life and enjoying a moment of quiet reflection.

Tasting Wagashi and Usucha

Duration: 15 minutes

After enjoying beautiful seasonal wagashi sweets, we will serve freshly prepared usucha thin tea. We will also teach you the basic etiquette for eating sweets and drinking tea on the spot, so please feel at ease.

Experience Making Tea Yourself

Duration: 15-20 minutes

In the latter part, you will try making tea yourself. We will carefully explain the technique and tips for using the chasen whisk. A cup of tea you make yourself has a truly special flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not good at sitting seiza. Is that okay?

Yes, please rest assured. Our classroom offers experiences and lessons using the “standing ceremony” (ryurei) style, where you perform the tea preparation while seated on a chair. Those uncomfortable with seiza or with limited mobility can enjoy the tea ceremony time without strain.

I'm a complete beginner. What should I bring?

All utensils are provided here, so you can come empty-handed. If possible, we would appreciate it if you could bring a pair of white socks (or tabi socks) (you will change into these when entering the tea room). Casual clothing is perfectly fine.

Do I need to wear a kimono for lessons?

No, wearing everyday clothes (Western-style clothing) for lessons is perfectly fine. In fact, many students attend in the clothes they wear to school or work. Of course, those wishing to practice in kimono are also very welcome. For those who wish to learn to dress themselves, we also offer advice on kimono dressing.

Is it okay to attend alone?

Yes, absolutely. Many people who come for a trial lesson attend alone. Classes are small, and we proceed carefully at each person's pace, so please feel free to come.

Can I reschedule if I miss a lesson?

Yes, you can. Even if something unexpected comes up, just let us know in advance and we'll reschedule you for another date. We're flexible to help busy people continue without stress, so please consult with us.
